Summary

Hanga-Aro-Rau Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics Workforce Development Council has completed a scheduled review of the Apparel and Fashion Technology unit standards and has worked closely with industry to develop skill standards. Feedback from providers and industry highlighted a lack of provision of training in the apparel industry, so the decision was made to develop standards that could be applied to multiple sectors, such as apparel, furniture making and advanced textiles.

The development of skill standards took place between January and May 2024. Representatives from the apparel, furniture and advanced textiles industries and providers of training in industrial sewing contributed to the development of the new standards. Regular online meetings were conducted to ensure that the standards developed met the needs of industry and prepared learners for success in a wide range of industries that use industrial sewing.

Main changes

·      Fourteen unit standards were expired and replaced by six skill standards.

·      An additional six skill standards have been developed to reflect the underlying sewing skills used in industry and are able to be applied to a range of learning contexts.

Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2026
