Summary

NZQA National Qualifications Services reviewed the above English language unit standards as part of their regular quality assurance cycle. The review was led by a Review Advisory Group (RAG) which was convened in December 2022 and conducted by a working group throughout 2023, with representation from the Ministry of Education (ESOL, Refugee and Migrant Education), TESOLANZ (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Aotearoa New Zealand), secondary schools, PTEs, polytechnics, the NZCEL (New Zealand Certificates in English Language) Providers Forum and the NZQA English language national moderator.

They were chosen not only for their expertise, but also for their ability to consult with the sector they represent This review involved extensive consultation with stakeholders, through engagement with all parts of the English language sector, prior to and throughout the review process, to identify and respond to sector needs and the diversity of English language learners.

Main changes

·                All standards amended to include English language within the titles.

·                The assessment demand in some standards was reduced to better reflect the range of learning contexts.

·                Pre-requisites were removed from all standards.

·                References to specific CEFR levels were removed.

·                Guidance information references supporting documents replaced the reference to the NZCEL Guiding Document. These will include guidelines relating to appropriate texts, task specifications and assessment conditions for each level.

·                Unit standard 30996 was set to expire due to low usage.

·                Unit standard 41041 credit value was reduced to better reflect the notional hours required.

·                Guidelines for preparing submission for moderation were included in the guidance information.

·                Links to supporting resources were updated.

Category D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2027

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2026
