Summary

A review for flooring trade qualifications in 2019 highlighted the need for specialist training in carpet tile and floating floor systems. Waihanga Ara Rau Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council consulted with tangata whai mana (interested parties) from across Aotearoa New Zealand through in-person conversations, phone calls, online meetings, and email communications to establish that this specialist training is still required by industry.

There was clear consensus that micro-credentials and associated skill standards would complement the recently updated flooring qualifications and would provide professional training and recognition in specialist flooring sectors that are growing in demand.

Technical advisory groups were formed to provide feedback and guidance across the development of the skill standards and throughout the consultation process to ensure that the newly developed skill standard would meet the needs of industry.

Main changes

·                Two new skill standards were developed to meet the needs of industry and provide formal training for flooring systems in carpet tile and floating floors.
