Summary of review and consultation process

The review was requested by providers developing programmes leading to version 2 of the qualification. The large number of Graduate Profile Outcomes (GPOs) made it difficult to develop meaningful learning and assessment activities. One of the recommendations from providers was to reduce the GPOs to allow flexibility when developing programmes while ensuring that none of the original content was lost which could also accommodate any changes that occurred in industry practices without the need to carry out a formal review of the qualification.

There was also a request from providers to consider changing the work placement requirement from two clinics to one clinic as two clinics was a barrier for some students, especially those in rural areas.  The rationale was that sufficient practical application of the GPOs could be achieved from one clinic.

A Working Group was selected and made up of providers and industry. Initial work was carried out to merge GPOs into higher level overarching GPOs. It was agreed that a socialisation phase should be carried out first with providers who have a current programme, providers who have accreditation but no programme as yet, and with providers who have signalled an intention to develop a programme in the future.  The socialisation phase was carried out from mid-September 2024 to early October 2024.  There was general agreement to reduce the number of GPOs and there was agreement on the proposed new GPOs. There was also agreement to change the work placement requirement from two clinics to one clinic to enable easier access for students in rural areas.

Wider stakeholder consultation was carried out by online survey in November 2024 for a period of 3 weeks.

The Working Group met in mid-November 2024 and considered the feedback. There was agreement among all respondees that the revised GPOs were workable. There was agreement to change the work placement requirement to one clinic and that students could attend more than one clinic on work placement if they chose, but it should remain as an option to ensure there were no barriers to completion.

The Working Group is satisfied that the revised qualification meets industry and provider needs, that sufficient consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders, and views of stakeholders have been considered.
