Summary of review and consultation process |
The Drama qualifications were reviewed by Toi Mai Workforce Development Council as part of the five-year review cycle. The review was overseen by a specialist advisory group consisting of representatives from the sector, including Māori practitioners, and providers currently offering programmes leading to the qualifications. Following preliminary engagements across the sector, an advisory group was convened at the end of January 2024 to complete draft revision to the qualifications. This initial advisory was subsequently combined with a separately convened Māori actors’ group and had multiple meetings from May to September, after which proposed changes were distributed for consultation through an online survey and discussions with key stakeholders. Consultation feedback was integrated into the final versions as appropriate. |
Main changes resulting from the review process |
Main changes The reviewed qualifications will be discontinued and have been replaced by new qualifications in Acting to more clearly articulate a graduate’s scope of practice and professional identity as an actor. The general conditions for the new qualifications now include links to professional codes and guidelines, as well as new requirements on the integration of te ao Māori and other cultural perspectives into programmes. Specific details on the differences between the old and new qualifications are as follows: New Zealand Certificate in Drama (Level 4) [Ref: 3415] replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Acting (Level 4) [Ref: 5244] · The strategic purpose statement clarifies the purpose of the qualification to provide graduates with an introduction to industry-relevant skills and competencies, but not necessarily a direct pathway into industry. · The graduate profile outcomes (GPOs) have been aligned with current industry needs and terminologies, including an emphasis on the importance of personal wellbeing and understanding industry ecosystems. New Zealand Diploma in Drama (Level 5) [Ref: 3428] replaced by the New Zealand Diploma in Acting (Level 5) [Ref: 5246] · The strategic purpose statement clarifies the purpose of the qualification as an entry point into the industry as a professional actor. · The GPOs have been aligned with current industry needs and terminologies, including a focus on personal wellbeing and maintaining sustainable practice, effective engagement with industry ecosystems, and required competencies for operating as independent contractors. New Zealand Diploma in Drama (Level 6) [Ref: 3429] replaced by the New Zealand Diploma in Acting (Level 6) [Ref: 5247] · The strategic purpose statement was amended to clarify operational scope where graduates will be able to operate independently as professional actors. · The GPOs have been aligned with current industry needs and terminology. |
