Summary of review and consultation process |
Te Pūkenga trading as Ara Institute of Canterbury initiated a consultation process regarding the current Diploma in Enrolled Nursing (DEN) qualification listing at the end of November 2024. This consultation engaged key stakeholders across New Zealand including representatives from Health New Zealand, business divisions of Te Pūkenga Institute of Technology and other employers in the health sector. Initially, stakeholder engagement was challenging due to timing: however, a subsequent survey distribution resulted in significantly higher participation. Alongside the survey, Ara upon request, conducted in-person consultations with key healthcare stakeholders from the Waitaha and South Canterbury regions. This feedback was subsequently addressed during a planned 2-day workshop which considered feedback from stakeholder consultation, the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) Nursing Education Programme Standards (2024), and the NCNZ Standards of competence for enrolled nurses (February 2025). It was determined from the feedback received, and the updated NCNZ Standards of competence for enrolled nurses, necessitated revisions to the current DEN qualification. Consequently, new graduate profile outcomes were developed to align with these standards of competence. This revision addresses identified gaps in the current qualification, particularly in cultural safety and kawa whakaruruhau, leading to adjustments in the indicative credits for each GPO. |
Main changes resulting from the development/review process |
· Strategic purpose section amended to align with NCNZ Standards of competence for enrolled nurses (February 2025). · Education Pathway updated. · General conditions of the programme amended. · Transition information updated. · Graduate profile outcomes (GPOs) were integrated, resulting in the reduction from 8 to 6 GPOs. The 6 GPOs align with the 5 Pou of the NCNZ Standards of competence for enrolled nurses. · Total qualification credits remained at 180, however credits were re-distributed across the 6 GPOs. |
