The Toi Mai Workforce Development Council has completed the review of the unit standard listed above.

Date new version published                                                                 June 2025

Planned review date                                                                              December 2030

Summary

This review was undertaken in collaboration with the outdoor sector and first aid representatives, including the Association of Emergency Care Training Providers (AECTPNZ), as part of regular scheduled maintenance of the standard. During 2024, meetings were conducted with key stakeholders to determine the sector requirements. Public consultation was then carried out via the Toi Mai website and email.

Usage of standard 424 has been declining over the last five years and due to a lack of alignment with current training the standard has been designated for expiry. Any accepted first aid practices relating to 6400, 6401 and 6402 will be added with the outdoor context to the guidance document held on Toitū te Waiora’s website: First Aid as a Life Skill - Toitū te Waiora (toitutewaiora.nz).

A new skill standard has been developed to address a critical gap in learning between the foundational first aid unit standards (6400-6402) and the advanced-level knowledge required for Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) unit standard 29321. Both the new standard and 424 have been transferred to Toitū te Waiora Community, Health, Education and Social Services Workforce Development Council.

Main changes

·         This unit standard will be expired and replaced by a new skill standard. The skill standard recognises skills and knowledge in the long-term care of an injured person in an outdoor emergency situation. The focus of this standard is on the extended period of time for which care is being provided rather than first aid skills, which are covered in the 6400 series.

Category C unit standard 424 will expire at the end of December 2027
