Summary
Waihanga Ara Rau has developed three new skill standards designed to replace expiring unit standards. Each skill standard serves as an introductory standard for those applying for the respective W (Wheels), R (Rollers) or T (Tracks) endorsements, to legally drive special-type vehicles on a road. The standards provide skills supporting the requirements set by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).
The development was overseen by a technical advisory group that included representatives from NZTA as the regulatory body, providers and industry experts. The technical advisory group met online between October and November 2024 to create the new skill standards.
Draft versions of the standards were back from wider consultation with stakeholders in December 2024. All feedback received was reviewed and incorporated where appropriate.
Main changes
· Three unit standards will expire and replaced by three new skill standards.
Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2027
