Waihanga Ara Rau Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council has completed the review of the unit standards listed above and development of new skill standards to be listed in the Crane Operation domain.

Date new versions published                                                                                               November 2025

Planned review date                                                                                               December 2030

Summary

Waihanga Ara Rau Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council initiated a review of 15 unit standards concurrently with a review of the related qualifications, the New Zealand Certificate in Cranes (Level 3) with strands in Cab-Controlled Overhead Crane, Dogman, Pendant-Controlled Overhead Crane, Self-Erecting Tower Crane, and Truck Loader Crane [Ref: 3730] and New Zealand Certificate in Cranes (Level 4) with strands in Advanced Dogman, Crawler Crane, Mini Crane, Mobile Crane, Non-Slewing Articulated Crane, and Tower Crane [Ref: 3731].

A series of Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meetings were held online and in-person during 2023 and 2024 to develop the suite of skill standards to meet industry needs. The TAG consisted of industry and provider representatives with consent to assess, and representatives from industry stakeholder organisations, including the Crane Association New Zealand.

This was then followed by a period of public consultation on the proposed changes during December 2024 and January 2025.

The reviewed qualifications now show the alignment of these skill standards to the qualification graduate profile outcomes.

Main changes

·         Three new skill standards were developed to recognise skills industry value.

·         Unit standard 3788 was set to expire without replacement as similar content is now covered by skill standard 40845.

·         Unit standard 30072 was set to expire without replacement as it is not fit for purpose and alternative standards are now available for use to meet a similar need.

·         14 unit standards were expired and replaced by 16 skill standards.

Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2027
