Summary of review and consultation process |
|
The Commercial Barbering qualification review project was started in April 2024 as a part of Toi Mai’s planned review schedule. In August, the barbering qualification review was communicated on Toi Mai’s website, including an initial consultation survey and invite to participate in the review. Alongside the qualification review, industry feedback was received via consultation for Kia Ita the Barbering and Hairdressing Workforce Development Plan (WDP) published by Toi Mai in July 2024. In November 2024, the barbering advisory group was formed to work on the qualification review taking recommendations from consultation. Based on the consultation, the strategic purpose statement and general conditions were updated, and two additional GPOs were added and existing GPOs updated. Early 2025 the advisory group and smaller writing group finalised the draft qualification and published on Toi Mai website for consultation. Following consultation, minor changes were made. |

Main changes resulting from the review process |

Main changes to the qualification include: · Strategic purpose statement updated to remove ‘independently’ and ‘standalone’. · Employment pathways updated to remove ‘independently’. · Qualification specifications updated and changes made to statements for qualification award, consistency requirements, general conditions. · GPO statements split from three to five GPOs to align with mandatory skill standards. · Old GPO 1 was split into two. (GPO1 and GPO2). · New GPO5 was added to cover business practices for commercial barbering operations. · Mandatory skill standards were added as conditions against qualification GPOs.
