Summary of review and consultation process

Hanga-Aro-Rau Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics Workforce Development Council commenced the review of the Fellmongery and Leather Processing qualifications listed above in November 2024. The review was to ensure the qualifications continued to be fit-for-purpose for the Fellmongery and Leather Processing industry sectors and make necessary changes where required.

Hanga-Aro-Rau had regular online meetings with Industry, New Zealand Leather and Shoe Research Association, and subject matter experts (Qualifications Advisory Group) providing the feedback and input required for this review. All changes were circulated to a wider stakeholder group for feedback and input into the proposed changes in the event they could not attend the regular meetings.

The Qualifications Advisory Group has confirmed support for the reviewed qualifications and agreed that the New Zealand Diploma in Leather Processing (Technology) (Level 5) [Ref: 2494] should be discontinued.

 

Main changes resulting from the review process

Overall changes:

The strategic purpose statement, and employment, cultural and community pathway were updated in all Fellmongery and Leather Processing qualifications to ensure they are fit for purpose.

The strategic purpose statement was updated to reflect the current practices.

The qualification specifications and transition information have been updated to reflect the change in standard setting body.

The general conditions information was updated to include information on the programme endorsement process.

 

Specific changes:

New Zealand Certificate in Fellmongery and Leather Processing Operation (Level 3) [Ref: 2486]

- The title was updated to include ‘Operation’ to align with the nature of work done in the industry in New Zealand.  

- Graduate profiles 1 and 3 updated to better align with sector needs and practice.

New Zealand Certificate in Fellmongery and Leather Processing Operation (Level 4) [Ref: 2492]

- The title was updated to include ‘Operation’ to align with the nature of work done in the industry in New Zealand
- Graduate profiles updated to better reflect current practices, by merging the three graduate profiles into two.
- Credit value of the qualification has reduced from 65 to 50  to reflect the current time required to acquire the required knowledge and skills.

New Zealand Diploma in Leather Processing (Technology) (Level 5) [Ref: 2494]
 - This qualification is no longer required and has not been used for some time and will be discontinued.
