Hanga-Aro-Rau Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics Workforce Development Council has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.
Date new versions published September 2025
Planned review date December 2030
Summary
The review of the unit standards listed above was long overdue as this industry has undergone extensive health and safety review resulting in more stringent regulatory requirements identifying specific unit standards required for compliance. The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) who conducted the review consisted of industry, regulatory bodies and providers who have consent to assess.
Main changes
· All unit standards were updated in line with current industry practices, standards, acts and regulations.
· Guidance Information was updated across all standards to reflect current legislation, and the term industry best practice changed to industry good practice as currently used in the industry.
· Standard Setting Body was changed from MITO to Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council.
Extractive Industries Management
· Unit standards 7142 and 28742 were set to expire due to duplication of content. Two new skill standards 40894 and 40895 were developed to remove this duplication and provide clearer, level-appropriate coverage.
· Unit standard 28982: Recommended prior learning was added to Guidance Information. Outcome 1 was amended to include the term purpose. Outcome 2 was revised to specify that actions occur ‘as a result of a risk management process’, the range statement was removed, and the wording of performance criterion 2.2 was clarified for better understanding. Outcome 3 was amended to ‘Carry out’ testing and implementation to better reflect the required actions. Two performance criteria were moved from outcome 3 to outcome 4, to ensure the review of the standard operating procedure (SOP) was aligned with current industry practices.
· Unit standard 30902 was set to expire and replaced by a new skill standard 40893 which is more up to date reflecting current industry practices.
· Unit standard 30905 title was amended to reflect the change in legislation including changes to outcomes, performance criteria and range statements.
Surface Extraction
· Unit standard 17696 was set to expire as content duplicates material in unit standard 23648 and is therefore no longer required.
Underground Extraction
· Unit standard 21821 prerequisite was added.
Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2027
