Summary

Unit standards in Preliminary Journalism Skills and Radio domains were reviewed alongside a broader development of skill standards in Content Creation.  This development focused on creative technologies and multimedia competencies that support both technical skills and creative expression across a range of personal and professional contexts, including contemporary and emerging media environments.

The development and review process was led by Toi Mai Workforce Development Council and involved tertiary providers, schools, industry professionals, and contributors from informal training settings.  The project was delivered in two phases, beginning in March–April 2025.  The first phase resulted in the registration of Level 2 skill standards in July 2025, centred on foundational use of creative technologies.  The second phase focused more on media competencies, primarily at Level 3, and therefore was able to incorporate the existing Journalism and Radio unit standards.

Consultation with key stakeholders – including current users of the unit standards – was conducted in August and September 2025, followed by a public consultation via the Toi Mai website. Feedback was reviewed and integrated where appropriate.

Two of the new standards have been developed to be registered in the Generic Computing domain, reflecting the broader applicability of the competencies beyond creative and media contexts.

The responsibility for these standards has been transferred from Toi Mai Workforce Development Council to Electrotechnology and Information Technology Industry Skills Board to reflect the VET reforms.

Main Changes

·         The standard setting body details were updated to Electrotechnology and Information Technology Industry Skills Board.

·         Two new skill standards in the Generic Computing domain were developed to address competencies in emerging technologies applicable across a range of contexts.

·         Five unit standards were designated expiring and replaced by four new skill standards in Content Creation to better reflect current industry practice and support flexible application across creative and professional settings.

·         All new skill standards are listed in the Content Creation domain that was recently moved from subfield Electronic Media to the new Creative Media subfield.

·         14 unit standards were designated expiring without replacement (Category D), as they are no longer considered relevant or fit for purpose.

Category C and D standards will expire at the end of December 2027
