Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Certificate in Automotive Trades is to provide appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities for students to gain employment in the motor industry.
Graduate profile
Students graduating from Certificate in Automotive Trades will contribute as competent and productive apprentices/trainees in the workforce. They will have:
- A knowledge of the structure of the motor industry
- An understanding of the theoretical basis of automotive engineering
- An awareness of the legislation, technical and industry standards relevant to the motor industry
-0 The ability to communicate effectively with workmates, team members and clients and management
- A practical understanding of techniques used to remove, repair, replace and refit components within the automotive trade
- A basic overview on diagnosing faults in line with the modern approach to using computers and digital test equipment
- Ability to show flexibility in their approach to tasks and problems
- The ability to work with accuracy, safety and precision
- The knowledge and ability to tune, overhaul and strip down an engine

Entry Requirements
Academic achievement
Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in tertiary study, shown by the completion of any of the following qualifications or courses of study:
a) 48 or more credits at NCEA Level 1, and must include NCEA Level 1 requirements for Literacy and Numeracy; and/or
b) Equivalent NZQF Unit Standards
c) Applicants will be required to undertake a Mechanical Aptitude Test administered by WITT
d) Class 1 Drivers Licence is required
English language
Applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools or other teaching institutions is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed such test of English language competence as required in the Policy and Procedure English Language Proficiency.
Life skills/work experience
Applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria above may be admitted to the programme if they are able to demonstrate:
a) Equivalent knowledge and skills; and/or
b) Previous and relevant life skills or work experience; and/or
c) Other formal or informal study
such as to suggest likelihood of successful programme completion

Level

The NZQF has ten levels. Level one is least complex and is often entry-level, for example foundation certificates. Levels eight to ten are the most complex, and include post-graduate study.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
