Guidelines for developing an NZ Diploma in Business assessment grid

This page contains guidelines for designing an assessment grid for an NZ Diploma in Business prescription.

A good assessment grid helps ensure assessment activities are correctly designed in relation to prescription learning outcomes and weightings.  It can be an effective tool for assessment designers, particularly when assessment is integrated across learning outcomes or prescriptions.

For National External Moderation, the assessment grid must clearly indicate which assessments cover which learning outcomes and the associated weightings.  The amount of detail a grid should contain depends on the nature of the assessment and/or the complexity of the overall assessment design.



  • Read each prescription learning outcome, with its key elements, and decide whether it can be effectively assessed in one stand-alone assessment, spread across two or more assessments, or integrated with assessment for another learning outcome.
  • Decide on the number and type of assessments to be used (e.g. test, assignment, exam) and enter them in the bottom row of the grid, with planned weightings.
  • Enter the learning outcomes, key elements and weightings from the prescription in the first column.
  • Indicate preliminary ideas about which learning outcome(s) and key elements will be assessed by which assessment task - tick appropriate boxes in the grid.

Remember: Assessments should enable learners to provide assessment evidence for key elements in the context of the relevant learning outcome.  Assessment designers must also take into account prescription assessment notes and the New Zealand Qualifications Framework level descriptors.  More information is available on the NZDipBus prescription format page.

Development (all development activities are concurrent)

  • Design the assessment tasks, ensuring that each learning outcome is fully assessed and key elements and any required ranges are covered.
  • Write assessment (marking) schedules.
  • Complete the assessment details in the assessment grid (that is, enter assessment activities, tasks and/or question numbers as appropriate, with associated weightings).
  • Complete the last two columns in the assessment grid to confirm the actual assessment weightings and any variance from the prescription weightings.


Final check:

  • Are all learning outcomes assessed?
  • Are all key elements assessed in the context of the learning outcome?
  • Have all assessment notes been taken into account?
  • Do overall weightings of all the learning outcomes adhere to the prescription weightings (or fall within the 10% variance allowed)?
  • Are assessment activities at the appropriate level for the prescription?
  • Are all instructions and assessment conditions clear and appropriate?
  • Is the assessment grid consistent with assessment activities and assessment schedules?
