Applying for an IQA for teacher salary assessment purposes
If you are already registered to teach in New Zealand with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand but need an IQA for a teacher salary assessment by the Ministry of Education, please be sure to refer to the flowchart below before applying. The flowchart will help you determine whether you require an IQA, and if you need to select the Teaching Assessment Add-On during the application process.
IMPORTANT: The Teaching Assessment Add-On mentioned below is only for applicants who are already registered with the Teaching Council and require an IQA specifically for teacher salary assessment. The add-on is not for applicants who intend to study in the future for a teaching qualification. If your purpose is further study, please click here for information on how to apply.
Definition of a Teaching Qualification
A teaching qualification is an academic qualification awarded for the completion of study which is designed to prepare a person to become a teacher. In New Zealand teaching qualifications (known as initial teacher education (ITE) because they are completed before joining the profession as a registered teacher) include theoretical studies integrated with assessed practicum experiences.
List of Pre-Approved Overseas Teaching Qualifications
The List of Pre-Approved Overseas Teaching Qualifications is a list maintained by NZQA and can be accessed through this link. These are teaching qualifications that have been pre-approved for teacher registration and teacher salary assessment purposes. This means that no IQA is required to register with the Teaching Council if your qualification is on this list.
List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA)
LQEA refers to Immigration New Zealand’s List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment. If your qualification is on this list, you may not require an IQA for teaching purposes. Refer to the flowchart above to determine what you need to apply for (if anything).
