Business qualifications

New Zealand Business qualifications, at Levels 3-6, were published on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework in 2015. This followed a mandatory review of Business qualifications from 2012-2014.

NZQA National Qualifications Services (NQS), in collaboration with, and on behalf of the sector, is now facilitating a review of the Level 3-6 qualifications, with the exception of three New Zealand Māori Business and Management qualifications.

Current review of NZ Business qualifications

NZQA National Qualifications Services has facilitated review of 11 New Zealand qualifications in Business, in collaboration with and on behalf of the business communities in Aotearoa New Zealand. We now invite stakeholder comments on the reviewed qualifications.

Consultation

Consultation on the reviewed New Zealand Business qualifications is open until Friday 23 August 2019, with 10 draft reviewed New Zealand Business qualifications available below.

Your comments and feedback on the 11 qualifications reviewed in Business may be submitted via a survey form (DOCX, 557KB).

Please send your survey form to business.qualifications@nzqa.govt.nz by Friday 23 August 2019.

The review

A review advisory committee was convened in late 2018, who:

  • recommended the reviewed condition that relates to the “realistic” assessment context (refer to survey question 1)
  • recommended the replacement of separate People, Affective, Cognitive, and Business environment outcomes by a qualification condition (refer to survey question 2)
  • reviewed core compulsory outcomes in the diplomas, and
  • confirmed the research of the existing needs analysis remains current.

These recommendations were subsequently supported by the stakeholder e-mail network, with some amendments to the draft conditions and outcomes.

Panels were convened to review the certificates and/or strands in each stream, and the outcomes were supported by stakeholders, sometimes with amendments.

In relation to other diploma strands:

  • The Real Estate strand was reviewed by The Skills Organisation, with no amendments
  • The Māori Business and Management strand was reviewed by NZQA Māori Qualification Services, who will also review the certificates in Māori Business and Management in 2020, and
  • The Marketing and Sales and Human Resource Management strands have not yet been used sufficiently to justify a review, and so are unchanged.

From February to April 2019, review panels reviewed qualifications and/or strands in particular streams – ie Accounting, Business Administration and Technology, etc. View review progress report (PDF, 48KB) from May 2019.

At all stages in the review, stakeholders have been kept informed and their comments and feedback have been actively considered. Research has indicated that the needs analysis (PDF, 621KB), which informed the initial development of these qualifications, remains current.

Draft Qualifications

Each review panel has met and drafted changes to their certificate(s) and/or diploma strand(s):

New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus)

The New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) is a nationally recognised qualification that allows learners to gain a broad range of general business skills and knowledge, followed by an opportunity to focus on career related options such as accountancy, banking, management, marketing and tourism.

As a result of the nation-wide mandatory review of Business qualifications, the New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) is now expiring.  Read more »

Support material for NZ qualifications

Unit standards developed specifically for assessment towards New Zealand qualifications are available. Unit standards support material is also available (PDF, 168KB).

Assessment Support Material for Business Administration and Technology (BAT) unit standards is available on the Business Administration and Technology Assessment Support Material webpage.

Once new version of qualifications have been published, support material will be updated to support them. It is anticipated that approved qualifications will be published by the end of 2019.

Mandatory review of Business qualifications (2012-2014)

Qualifications in Business (at levels 1-6, excluding university qualifications) were reviewed from 2012 to 2014 as part of the nation-wide mandatory review of qualifications.

The mandatory review was to reduce the duplication and proliferation of qualifications on a national scale, and to ensure that qualifications are useful, relevant and valuable to current and future learners, employers and other stakeholders.

As a result of this review National Certificates and Diplomas, and local qualifications, were set to expire.
