Demonstrate and apply introductory knowledge of music technology equipment and techniques

The following exemplars are student evidence for Outcome 2.2 where students are required to create a short score using the features and functions of music technology equipment and techniques according to documented equipment specifications.

An indication of length which allows students to meet Excellence criteria would be between 16-24 bars for 1 musical line. Range includes but is not limited to – title, composer, tempo, staves, time signature, key signature.

Achieved

Commentary Student response

This exemplar has been created using Sibelius 6 music-writing software. It meets Achievement criteria as it covers the required range to include title, tempo, stave, time and key signature. The initial 24 bars of target range have been accurately transcribed however after bar 24 pitch and rhythm are less accurate.

Please note: the addition of composer name would further benefit this score.

Merit

Commentary Student response

This exemplar has been created using Sibelius 6 music-writing software. It meets Merit criteria as it covers the required range, together with the addition of articulation markings, to create a stylistically consistent score.

Aspects which keep the exemplar in Merit criteria rather than Excellence include: font errors, such as lack of capitalisation; inconsistent layout compared to source material; incorrect use of slurs/ties, e.g. bar 15 Bb-A and bar 17 D-G. Rehearsal bar numbers are also absent. Further attention to these editing details could move this exemplar into Excellence criteria.

Excellence

Commentary Student response

This exemplar has been created using Sibelius 6 music-writing software. It meets Excellence criteria as it is stylistically consistent, clear and (highly) accurate. Examples of meeting this criterion include: identical font to original for composer and initial tempo indication; precise articulation markings (slurs, ties, staccato etc.) together with rehearsal bar numbers. Further, layout alignment (6 bars per system) is identical to original.

There is a level of attention to detail in this score which allows the student to create an identical version of the original source material. This indicates a high level of ability in utilising the features and functions of this particular score-writing music technology.
