Review for Music Technology unit standards

This review covers the four unit standards at levels 1-3 in the Music Technology domain.  A review panel made up of experts in the field met twice in October and November. Consultation on proposed changes closes on Monday 16 March 2020.

The major changes proposed are:

  • The revision of one standard and the addition of five new standards
  • The expiry of three standards in December 2022. The three standards have specified replacement relationships with five new standards

As part of the review, outcomes on creating sequences using music technology equipment now occupy their own unique standards, as do those on using music notation software. This allows greater flexibility for their use, as students often focus in one area only.

The standards on sequencing have a greater focus on musical creativity and real-world application that can be applied across genres and require demonstration of a greater range of techniques than previously.

There is no longer any assessment at level 3 on using music notation software, as there is no effective qualitative step-up from level 2. In the current standards, the step-up from levels 2-3 is largely quantitative.

The tables below summarise the key changes, including replacement relationships for the standards proposed to expire. The new/replacement standards appear in bold.
