Review of Business Administration unit standards 2019

Current developments – open for consultation until 11 October 2019

NZQA National Qualifications Services (NQS) is consulting on the review of 54 Business Administration unit standards at Levels 1 to 6.  This review excludes the 14 standards developed in May 2016 for the New Zealand Business Administration and Technology qualifications.

We welcome feedback on the proposed changes, including the 15 reviewed and seven new standards, and the 39 standards proposed to expire in December 2022.  Please send feedback on any aspect of the reviewed standards to nqs@nzqa.govt.nz by 11 October 2019.

Main changes proposed

  • Updating 15 reviewed standards, and adding seven new standards.  The new standards are ‘combined’ text processing and composition standards, and meeting and travel standards.
  • Changes to the reviewed standards include changes to levels (11650, 21863), credits (121, 327, 329, 18180, 21863, 21866) and/or titles (122, 327, 11650, 18180, 21863, 21866, 26768).
  • The expiry of 39 standards in December 2022.  29 standards have no direct replacement. 10 standards have specified replacement relationships with five new standards. The standards proposed to expire are no longer fit for purpose, or show significant duplication with other standards.  With the evolution of technology, many of the standards no longer reflected current work practice, so no longer need credentialing.
  • The expiry of two of the four domains - Business Information Management (BIM), Text and Information Management – Generic (TIM).

Expiring Standards - 39 proposed to expire 31 December 2022

The table below summarises the standards proposed to expire.  29 standards have no direct replacement relationship.  The 10 standards with replacement relationships with five new standards are shown in bold.  Details of the standards proposed for expiry are available here (PDF, 262KB).

The review panel met three times between February and May 2019.  Additional specialists were involved to review the four medical administration unit standards in July.

During the review, the panellists considered a range of communication and computing unit standards that may be suitable for integration with the business administration unit standards, or otherwise relevant in the context of business administration.  This has been captured in the supplementary information document (PDF, 173KB)

An email support network has received progress updates following the review panel meetings, and invited to provide feedback on the proposed changes as the review progressed.

These updates provide further detail on the approach and proposed changes.  E-support network feedback was considered prior to full consultation.
