Review of Legal Studies - Unit Standards 8545, 8551, 8552, 8555, 10337, 10347

NZQA National Qualifications Services (NQS) is reviewing the following unit standards listed on the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS) in March 2020.

Unit Standard





Describe the factors contributing to, and consequences of, crime




Describe the application of New

Zealand law to marriage, civil union, and de facto relationships




Describe legal consequences and

protections relating to domestic violence and child abuse




Describe the objectives and application of consumer law




Describe the legal rights and personal responsibilities of secondary school students




Demonstrate knowledge of the

development of the New Zealand legal system



We invite expressions of interest in participating in the review, either as a member of the review panel or as part of the supporting email network.

Review panel

The review panel will include up to six members. Individually each panellist will:

  • have wide expertise, and credibility, prestige, and mana within the sector
  • have experience with relevant Unit Standards
  • understand and be committed to best practice in standards-based assessment
  • be able to work collaboratively for the common good rather than just for own sector or interests
  • be available for the scheduled panel meeting.

Collectively, the panel will as far as possible be representative of all stakeholder groups. Panellists will also be part of the email network.

Panellists will meet between Wednesday 11 March and Thursday 12 March 2020 in Wellington.

  • review six current standards
  • examine the current standards and to decide whether/how they need to be amended so that they continue to meet identified needs.
  • where relevant, decide that other new standards are also needed.

Daily Fee

NZQA will pay a fee for service of $440 (GST excl) per full-day to each participant or their education organisation.  For school teachers requiring teacher relief, schools can invoice NZQA for $318.42 (GST excl.) and the teacher can personally claim $122.

Email network

Members of the email network will receive regular updates between meetings with opportunities to contribute feedback, opinions, and ideas. We are happy to add people to the email network at any time. If you wish to be included in the email network, please send your request to nqs@nzqa.govt.nz.
