Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wood panel manufacturing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge to achieve production requirements as operators in a wood panel manufacturing operation. Each strand represents a process undertaken in wood panelling manufacturing.

Graduates will have the technical skills and knowledge required for the safe and efficient operation of plant and equipment used in one of these processes under limited supervision.

Graduates of Composite Panel Finishing will also be able to sand and saw panels in a wood panel manufacturing operation.

Graduates of Laminated Veneer Lumber and Plywood will also be able to apply glue, grade and layer up laminated lumber or plywood and equipment in a wood panel manufacturing operation.

Graduates of Overlay Bonding will also be able to prepare raw material to produce overlay bonding products in a wood panel manufacturing operation.

Graduates of Veneer Preparation will also be able to prepare feed stock to produce laminated veneer lumber and Plywood for veneer preparation in a wood panel manufacturing operation.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Assess and minimise risk to self, others and plant equipment.
- Apply knowledge of environmental issues, productivity, quality and performance improvement to a wood panel manufacturing operation.

Graduates of the Composite Panel Finishing strand will also be able to:
- Operate composite panel finishing plant and equipment to produce quality products and meet productivity requirements.
- Monitor production parameters and identify operating and equipment faults and take corrective actions required to control composite panel finishing plant and equipment.

Graduates of the Laminated Veneer Lumber and Plywood strand will also be able to:
- Operate laminated veneer lumber or plywood plant and equipment to produce quality products and meet productivity requirements..
- Monitor production parameters and identify operating and equipment faults and take corrective actions required to control laminated veneer lumber or plywood plant and equipment.

Graduates of the Overlay Bonding strand will also be able to:
- Select, handle, and load raw materials used in overlay bonding from a production schedule.
- Carry out waste management and cleaning in an overlay bonding operation.
- Apply machinery, equipment and technical processes to carry out tasks specific to overlay bonding.

Graduates of the Veneer Preparation strand will also be able to:
- Operate veneer preparation plant and equipment to produce quality products and meet productivity requirements.
- Monitor production parameters and identify operating and equipment faults and take corrective actions required to control veneer preparation plant and equipment.
Education pathways
The Composite Finishing strand of this qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Composite Wood Panel Manufacturing (Level 4) [Ref: 2407].
The Laminated Veneer Lumber and Plywood and Veneer Preparation strands of this qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Finger Jointing (Level 4) [Ref: 2311] and the New Zealand Certificate in Timber Machining (Level 4) [Ref: 1974].
The Overlay Bonding strand of this qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Manufacturing (Level 4) with an optional strand in Technical Support [Ref: 2731].
Employment pathways
