Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with personnel who are able to perform deck crew duties on a vessel under direct supervision.
This is an entry-level qualification for people intending to enter the maritime sector.
Graduates will have the introductory maritime skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to work safely in a range of entry-level positions within the maritime industry.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Comply with workplace health and safety requirements on board a vessel.
- Apply basic skills with sea safety and survival equipment and with maritime emergency procedures.
- Work as an effective crew member to perform basic operational tasks and provide first aid on board a vessel.

This entry level qualification leads to the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Crewing (Level 3) [Ref: 2895]
- New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 3) with strands in Deck Crewing, Engineering, Passenger Services, and Superyacht Crewing [Ref: 2506]
- New Zealand Certificate in Fishing Vessel Crewing (Level 3) [Ref: 2891]
- New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Operations (Restricted Limits) (Level 4) [Ref: 2505].
Employment pathways
Graduates will have the skills and knowledge required to work safely in roles such as deck crew on vessels operating in restricted or near coastal waters.
With additional qualifications, training and experience, graduates may progress to employment as:
- Qualified deck crew
- Deck watch rating or able seafarer
- Skipper Coastal /Offshore
- Mate or master fishing vessel
