Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain engine room and auxiliary equipment to entry-level Marine Engineer Class 6 (MEC 6) standards under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
The qualification is intended for new entrants to the industry or engine room crew intending to progress to roles as marine engineer.
Graduates will generally operate under broad supervision from the chief engineer and the vessel master.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Follow safe working practices and contribute to emergency response on board a vessel.
- Operate and monitor vessel's propulsion engines and machinery.
- Maintain vessel's engine and machinery during in-service vessel operation.
- Prepare vessel's machinery and systems for survey and slipway maintenance.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 3) with strands in Deck Crewing, Engineering, Passenger Services, and Superyacht Crewing [Ref: 2506]
- New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 4) with strands in Deck Crew, Electro-technology, and Engineering [Ref: 2511].

This qualification leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 5 (Level 5) [Ref: 4321].
Graduates can also progress to higher-level marine engineering qualifications leading to Marine Engineer Class 1 (MEC 1) under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
Employment pathways
Graduates who are certified by Maritime NZ will be able to work as a Marine Engineer Class 6.
With additional qualifications, training and experience, graduates may progress to the following roles which are the most senior maritime command certificates:
- Marine Engineer Class 5
- Marine Engineer Class 4
- Marine Engineer Class 3
- Marine Engineer Class 2
- Marine Engineer Class 1.

Credits
