Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this qualification is to: 1. Induct emerging researchers into the role of educational research for inquiry-based teaching and learning, who can demonstrate evidence of advanced knowledge in a specialist field of inquiry
2. Prepare the next generation of researchers to undertake systematic and independent planning, execution, and completion of empirical research through culturally responsible and ethical research practice; this is achieved by partnering our students with knowledgeable supervisors and by establishing clear, effective research processes.
3. Grow a diverse community of scholars through research engagement that enables depth and breadth of research and researchers; this includes opportunities to study courses and conduct research in Early Childhood Leadership, Infants and Toddlers, Mātauranga Māori and the Montessori philosophy.
4. Develop and support the generation and dissemination of new, high quality, credible and meaningful research knowledge related to education in the Aotearoa New Zealand context and beyond. Co-publishing with supervisors is a fundamental practice for achieving this aim.
Graduate profile
The Master of Education (ECE) Degree programme is underpinned by a set of learning outcomes that collectively encompass the requisite pedagogical and theoretical research knowledge for teacher researchers in educational settings. Overall, the expectation is that graduates of any master's programme should be able to: * show evidence of advanced knowledge about a specialist field of enquiry or professional practice; * demonstrate mastery of sophisticated theoretical subject matter; * evaluate critically the findings and discussions in the literature; * research, analyse and argue from evidence; * work independently and apply knowledge to new situations; and * engage in rigorous intellectual analysis, criticism and problem-solving. In addition, the learning outcomes of this proposed Master of Education (ECE) degree embed the specific aims of our programme as well as the essence of the conceptual framework and graduate profiles. The learning outcomes therefore reflect an expectation that students will engage critically with research complexity and understanding of the professional role of researchers and their responsibilities to staff, learners, programmes, service management, family and whanau.
Education pathways
Upon completion of the M Ed. (ECE) graduates may wish to progress to doctoral study or to seek other related postgraduate qualifications. Both the coursework and thesis pathways provide opportunities for students to focus on ECE Leadership, Infants and Toddlers, Mātauranga Māori and from 2024 Montessori philosophy.
Employment pathways
The M Ed. (ECE) positions graduates to gain senior roles with in the ECE sector, for example: Ministry of Education, Education Review Office, Tertiary Education, Senior teaching, leadership and management roles in EC services, and other interdisciplinary employment providers that offer services to younger tamariki and whānau.To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
