Strategic Purpose Statement |
On completion of this qualification graduates will be able to apply for entry to the Nurse Assistant scope of practice in Long Term Care and Rehabilitation. The Certificate of Health Science (Nursing) will prepare students to work in support roles under the direction of a Registered Nurse as part of the health care team with clients in community residential and hospital settings. The Certificate of Health Science (Nursing) will prepare graduates who: have the knowledge and skills to provide safe, effective and competent client/patient care under the direction and delegation of a Registered Nurse in a variety of care settings within a specific area of practice (NCNZ, June, 2005). Work within a framework for practice informed by boundaries set by service specifications, area of practice, codes of conduct and legislation. Contribute to positive client outcomes. Will provide supportive environments for clients, are confident and flexible, and are able to work within their identified scope of practice in a continually changing health care system. Enhance their own professional development through learning, meet the requirements for the award of a Certificate of Health Science (Nursing); meet the academic requirements for entry to the nurse assistant scope of practice (NCNZ, June, 2005).

Entry Requirements |
Applicants must be16 years or over. If accepted will be required to provide a police check, Current Comprehensive First Aid Certificate, Evidence of immunity, Letter from GP regarding physical/ mental health status and Two referees reports.

This qualification focuses on areas of practice where clients/patients require long term care and rehabilitation. Competencies for the Nurse Assistant programme include professional responsibility, management of care, interpersonal relationships, inter-professional health care and quality improvement. Subjects to be covered include Anatomy & Physiology, Social Sciences, Clinical skills, Communication Skills, Cultural Safety, Ethical Issues, Legislation and Professional Issues and Nursing Practice.
