Strategic Purpose Statement
This certificate recognises competence in a wide range of skills that enables people to become a functioning part of a veterinary team, clinic, or hospital.

Specified standards reflect the core animal care and handling, and more specialist industry knowledge and skills required of a veterinary nurse whose primary role is to be an informed and skilled assistant to a veterinarian. Electives provide some flexibility for people to select business, generic, and industry standards relevant to their needs in a particular veterinary setting.

This qualification builds on the National Certificate in Animal Care [Ref: 0241], and can lead to and is a prerequisite for the National Diploma in Veterinary Nursing [Ref: 0222]. It provides an alternative career path to the proposed National Certificate in Animal Care (Rural Animal Technician) with strands in Production Animals, and Equine, with which there is a degree of overlap.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to work in client business interface of a companion animal veterinary clinic and maintain health and safety, care for hospitalised patients and assist with routine practices in a veterinary surgery.

Entry Requirements
Students must be able to demonstrate previous experience of working with animals and an aptitude for work with the public and must provide: evidence of at least three or more days observing the role of veterinarians and veterinary nurses, provide a reflective summary of the experience, evidence an aptitude for working with animals and people, declaration of Police Convictions, Health and Tetanus status, evidence of veterinary clinic to support practicum.

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
