Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification recognises that the holder has knowledge of key operations within a light leather tannery and can competently complete the specialist functions related to the area of light leather manufacture defined by the strand.

Acquisition of this qualification is evidence that the holder is a skilled and versatile operator in one of the areas of light leather manufacture of Tanning, or Retanning and Dyeing.

The qualification will provide the basis for progress towards other National Certificates in Leather Manufacturing Technology or Leather Manufacture.

The Tanning strand demonstrates the competence of a person who has general knowledge of tanning operations and can operate a light leather fleshing machine and process light skins through to tannage in drum or processor equipment. In addition the person will have the ability to operate basic waste disposal equipment or be able to grade wet blue skins for further processing.

The Retanning and Dyeing strand demonstrates the competence of a person who has general knowledge of tannery operations, can operate machinery to prepare skins for retanning and dyeing, and can carry out retanning and dyeing processes. In addition the person will have the ability to operate vacuum drying or wet wheeling equipment and/or the ability to grade wet blue skins for further processing.
