Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification provides an entry level qualification for people seeking a career in business or for those already working who wish to learn more about business operations. The National Certificate in Business (Level 4) (Introductory) recognises a broad range of technical business competencies across a range of business activities and allows people the option of building on those generic business competencies and achieving the National Certificate in Business (Level 4) (Intermediate). The elective nature of the qualification allows the selection of unit standards for the knowledge and skills most appropriate for the roleholder.

The National Certificate in Business (Level 4) with strands in Introductory, and Intermediate is one of a number of qualifications developed to meet the diverse needs of businesses, employers, and employees who have a preference for competency based qualifications. The range of qualifications is designed to provide a coherent set of qualifications that provide flexible entry and exit points and allow specialisation to meet the requirements of individual roleholders. Consequently, this qualification includes Subfields and domains that are also contained in the National Certificate in Business Administration [Ref: 0634] and the National Certificate in First Line Management [Ref: 0649].

The structure of the qualification allows for flexibility in training programmes and workbased training agreements, which can be tailored to meet the needs of the organisations concerned. This structure is designed to reflect the outcome of extensive consultation, which identified a preference by employers for a 60 credit qualification at level 4, while many providers preferred a 120 credit qualification. This flexibility allows programmes and training agreements to include the National Certificate in Business (Level 4) (Introductory) on its own or in conjunction with the National Certificate in Business Administration or the National Certificate in First Line Management, or the National Certificate in Business (Level 4) (Intermediate).

This qualification can lead to the National Diplomas in Business (Levels 5 and 6) [Refs: 0783 and 0784]. Alternatively people could choose to go on to other higher level qualifications which allow for industry or function specialisation.

Candidates should seek recognition of current competency wherever this is relevant. This can be done through workplace assessment processes, or through an accredited training provider.
