Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification is for people who are engaged in any of a diverse range of activities that contribute to conservation. With a small compulsory section and broad electives, the flexible structure of the qualification takes this diversity into account.
All people completing this qualification will have demonstrated knowledge of conservation and Maori land and conservation protocols, as well as knowledge and skills in first aid and workplace health and safety. The first elective grouping contains a choice of standards in, or related to, conservation knowledge and skills for maintaining and promoting conservation reserves and their use, including providing and maintaining visitor assets (recreation facilities), managing New Zealand''s natural heritage (biodiversity); advocating conservation through engaging the community, and vegetation fire control. The second elective grouping recognises the importance of interpersonal and written communication skills, and also generic computing skills, while providing flexibility to allow different standards to be used to reflect different roles. The third elective grouping contains a wide choice of standards reflecting the multi-skilled nature of this industry. There is considerable flexibility to allow for different roles and specialisations, drawing on knowledge and skills such as vegetation control, safety management and incident response, weather and terrain awareness, records management, traffic management, visitor service, awareness of Maori values, and basic construction and maintenance tasks. The qualification builds on the National Certificate in Conservation (Trainee Ranger) (Level 3) [Ref: 0642] and shares some standards with that qualification and the National Certificate in Parks and Reserves (Park Ranger) (Level 3) [Ref: 1475]. However, completion of either of these qualifications is not a prerequisite for entry into this Level 4 qualification. Those progressing to a management role in a conservation related area may wish to complete a first line management qualification and/or other suitable management qualification or qualifications. |
