Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification is designed to accommodate the needs of a wide cross section of industry personnel. The qualification provides evidence of the attainment of an intermediate level of workplace health and safety knowledge as well as recognising competencies associated with a range of workplace safety and health issues from specific industries.
This qualification has been designed to enable it to be used by a number of different industries. The compulsory section covers the common health and safety skills and knowledge required by all industries whereas the elective sections enable different industries to choose the standards, domains, or subfields that suit their requirements. Candidates completing this qualification would be able to progress to the National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Co-ordination) (Level 4) [Ref: 0944] if they wished to become occupational safety facilitators. This in turn could lead to further qualifications at diploma or degree level. |

Graduate profile |
The qualification provides evidence of the attainment of an intermediate level of workplace health and safety knowledge for personnel in any industry. It covers common health and safety skills and knowledge required by all industries as well as recognising competencies associated with prevention of common workplace injuries (Strand One) or safe operation of a powered industrial lift truck (forklift) (Strand Two).

Entry Requirements |
Requirements for Admission to the Organisation and to the Course Entry Criteria Entry to the programme is open, however preference will be given to candidates with the following: -National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety) (Level 1), or an equivalent qualification, or relevant commercial experience equivalent to the above. -A minimum of 8 credits in English and Maths or NCEA level 2 (for domestic students who do not hold the National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety) (Level 1). -An IELTS overall band score of 5.0 (international students or ESL students) -A minimum of 8 credits in English and Maths or NCEA level 2 for domestic students -A student permit to study for the National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety) (Level 3) at School of Business (international students) Selection Criteria Where the number of applicants is greater than the number of study places available applicants will be selected according to evidence from one or more of the following: -An interview -Verified evidence of higher than the minimum academic entry requirements -References from a school principal or past employer -Attestation from a kaumatua or equivalent community leader -Evidence of completion of the National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety) Level 1 -For those electing to do Strand 2, a minimum of a restricted class 1 drivers license is preferred (for forklift operation).
