This qualification is designed for people who are working in a self-directed capacity with general responsibility for beehive and honey house management. People may already have completed the National Certificate in Apiculture (Level 2) (Ref: 1036] prior to completion of this qualification, however it is not a prerequisite for this qualification.

The qualification's compulsory section recognises the skills required to manipulate beehives in spring to maximise honey production, rear queen bees, and carry out duties in a honey processing plant. It also recognises general knowledge related to bee diseases including varroa mite and American foulbrood (AFB), endemic and exotic bee diseases, disorders, pests, and conditions and includes the role of plants in beekeeping, the role of bees in pollination, and the production of beehive products.

Elective 1 allows people to select standards that are relevant to their own work situation which may include skills related to pollination programmes, use of a personal computer and the Internet, or driving. Elective 2 allows people to select standards that are relevant to work situations which require people to manage pests and/or to be involved with honey house processes which require food safety skills. People who are required to have Approved Handler status in their workplace should choose to gain credit for standards 21563 and 21564 from the Pest Control domain.

On completion of this qualification, people may progress to other specialised Primary Industry Training Organisation qualifications such as the National Certificate in Agribusiness Management (Agribusiness Resource Management) [Ref: 1187], National Certificate in Agribusiness Management (Business Planning and Financial Management) [Ref: 1186], or the National Diploma in Agribusiness Management [Ref: 0647].
