Strategic Purpose Statement
The Diploma in TESOL is intended as a higher qualification for those who are already teaching English to speakers of other languages. It will enable successful trainees to attain positions like Director of Studies, teacher trainers, senior teachers and other similar positions at English language schools and other tertiary linguistic institutions.
The course aims to provide a supportive environment for reflective professional development for experienced teachers of ESOL. The approach will be a balance of top-down and bottom-up to meet both the development needs of teachers and requirements for the examinations.
Graduate profile
The graduate outcomes of the Diploma are to:
Apply specialised solutions to contextual issues concerning the teaching of English to speakers of other languages to improve student engagement and participation.
Apply advanced language teaching skills within a variety of classroom settings to improve personal English communication skills and awareness.
Critically analyse teaching using best-practice to recommend strategies for continuing professional development.
Propose and defend solutions within the English as a Second Language domain in order to enhance professional practice.
Education pathways
Graduates may also seek further education opportunities in other New Zealand education providers. For some graduates this could mean progression to the Post-Graduate Diploma in TESOL (Level 8) or future EDENZ graduate programmes.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have:
Legal entitlement to study in New Zealand with appropriate immigration and/or refugee status, and;
A minimum of 2 years' full-time ESOL class teaching experience or relevant work experience;
A bachelor's degree;

Where students are an international student, an Academic IELTS score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5.

Note: Teachers with special needs will be required to demonstrate satisfactory techniques and strategies for coping with the demands of the course. They will provide at interview a demonstration of these strategies.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
