Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is for people who are working as, or training towards, a prison instructor role. It is one entry path into a career as a prison instructor, however professional skills in the qualification can only be completed while employed in the Prison Service. The prison instructor role is to provide safe, secure and humane containment of inmates whilst providing instruction in skills that may work towards reducing re-offending. The qualification represents a wide range of generic skills combined with specialised professional skills.

The generic skills include:
response to fires in the workplace;
operating a computer;
managing time;
first aid and basic life support;
interpersonal communications; and
writing reports.

The professional skills cover the major activities that prison instructors are engaged in during the course of their work, and relate to:
adult education and training;
the management and rehabilitation of prison inmates;
the management of safety and security in the prison environment;
occupational health and safety; and
running a commercially viable business.

The optional unit standard for managing inmate work parties may be required in some employment contexts.

The National Certificate in Public Sector Services (Prison Instruction) (Level 4) may lead on from the National Certificate in Offender Management (Level 3) [Ref: 0678] and shares some standards with it.

People who have gained this qualification will also have met the requirements of the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 4) [Ref: 0378].

This qualification can lead to the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 5) [Ref: 0379], and/or the National Diploma in Adult Education and Training (Level 5) [Ref: 0380].

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
