Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of Certificate in English (Elementary 2) will be on their way towards using English at a higher elementary or independent level. In particular they will have begun to be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters; deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; describe experiences and events; and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Graduates of Certificate in English (Pre-Intermediate) will be able to use English at a lower intermediate or independent level. In particular they will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc; deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions; and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Graduates of Certificate in English (Pre-Intermediate Employment Skills) will be able to use English at a lower intermediate or independent level. In particular they will be able to actively seek basic employment in their local community and have a basic understanding of the New Zealand job market and workplace culture; understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc; deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions; and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Graduates of Certificate in English (Pre-Intermediate Employment Skills - Trades) will be able to use English at a lower intermediate or independent level. In particular they will be able to safely and competently operate in a Trades workshop with a basic understanding of the specific vocabulary and workplace health and safety principles; understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in a Trades environment; deal with most situations likely to arise whilst working in a Trade where English language is spoken; produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions; and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
Graduates of Certificate in English (Intermediate) will be on their way towards using English at an intermediate or more independent level. In particular they will have begun to be able to understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects; and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Graduates of Certificate in English (Intermediate Employment Skills - Business and Computing) will be on their way towards using English at an intermediate or more independent level. In particular they will have begun to be able to actively seek employment in their local community and have a good understanding of the New Zealand job market and workplace culture; understand the main ideas of complex Business English texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including general business communication media; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects in particular Business topics; and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Graduates of Certificate in English (Intermediate Employment Skills - Healthcare) will be on their way towards using English at an intermediate or more independent level. In particular they will have begun to be able to actively seek employment in their local community and have a good understanding of the New Zealand job market and workplace culture; understand the main ideas of complex Healthcare English texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including general business communication media; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects in particular Healthcare topics; and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Graduates of Certificate in English (Intermediate Employment Skills, Office Skills) will be on their way towards using English at an intermediate or more independent level. In particular they will have begun to be able to actively seek employment in their local community and have a good understanding of the New Zealand job market and workplace culture; understand the main ideas of Business communication texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including general business communication media; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects in particular Business administration topics; and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Level

Credits
