Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of this programme and awarded this qualification will be able to access current information related to sterilising technology, discuss issues related to effective decontamination and sterilisation of surgical instruments, demonstrate practices that ensure the achievement and maintenance of sterility, apply validation requirements for cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of instruments and equipment, provide leadership for a team and train and verify the work of people providing sterile services and apply standards, legislation and quality management methods for continuous improvement in sterile services. Graduates of this certificate will have the knowledge and skills to work in a supervisory position in a health service as a sterilising technologist or in healthcare facilities using steam sterilisation such as a health, dental, podiatry or veterinary clinics. Graduates of this certificate are qualified to apply for enrolment on the Open Polytechnic's degree programmes. They may also apply for entry into the honours degree paper Scientific principles of medical device contamination through the University of Highlands and Islands, Scotland. Successful completion of this university course may lead to entry into the MSC Medical Device Decontamination through the University of Highlands and Islands.

Entry Requirements
To be admitted to the Certificate in Advanced Sterilising Technology Level 5 programme, applicants must Have successfully completed the Certificate in Sterilising Technology Level 3 of the Open Polytechnic or a qualification with similar outcomes. Applicants 20 years of age or over who have not successfully completed the Certificate in Sterilising Technology Level 3 of the Open Polytechnic or a qualification with similar outcomes may be admitted if they are able to demonstrate that they have a reasonable likelihood of success. This may mean that the applicant will have to successfully complete a course from the Certificate in Sterilising Technology before they can be admitted to study this qualification. Applicants for whom English is not their first language must, in addition to other entry requirements meet the following English Language Proficiency level If English is not your first language, you must supply evidence of one of the following with your enrolment application: A minimum score of 550 in TOEFL A minimum grade of 6 in IELTS academic with no subscore less than 5.5 Passes in other recognised English proficiency tests subject to the Academic Registrars discretion Evidence of successful study at another New Zealand tertiary institution.
