Strategic Purpose Statement
This certificate recognises the nautical and maritime safety skills and knowledge required for award of the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Advanced Deckhand - Fishing Endorsement qualification. These are the skills and knowledge required to work safely on the deck of a seafood vessel, and provide the foundation for further MNZ qualifications such as the New Zealand Offshore Watchkeeper (NZOW), New Zealand Offshore Master (NZOM), Mate of a Deep Sea Fishing Vessel (1MDSV), and Master of a Deep Sea Fishing Vessel (MDSV).

This qualification consists of a compulsory section because this covers the requirements of the MNZ qualification. This section covers seafood vessel operations skills and knowledge such as working with wire ropes, chains, and related fittings; safe deck practices; working on a commercial fishing vessel; protection of the marine environment; and the duties of a watchkeeper. It also covers navigation and seamanship skills and knowledge such as berthing and letting go; anchoring a vessel; use of knots, lashings, and navigation aids; and stowage and handling of ropes. In addition, it covers sea survival and sea safety skills and knowledge such as awareness of vessel parts, fittings, and equipment; abandon ship procedures and sea survival techniques; and fire prevention.
