The strands recognise the specialist management skills required in one of the sectors - Harness Racing, Thoroughbred Racing, or Breeding. People will select the skills and knowledge relevant to their workplace requirements and personal development.

For the Harness Racing and Thoroughbred Racing strands, these areas include equine health, husbandry, industry, and training; plus specific standards relevant to harness or thoroughbred racing.

The Breeding Strand recognises the breeding management skills such as teasing, mare and foal care, care of a sick foal, management and education of horses from weaning to yearling age, and preparation of yearlings for sale. The Breeding Strand electives allow people to select standards for specialisation in areas of evaluation of a horse's potential, stallion management, artificial insemination, and horse training.
