Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is designed for people who already have some experience in the pork industry and who wish to further their skills in the area of pig husbandry for both indoor and outdoor pork production units.

Holders of this qualification will have the skills to maintain feed supplies, and manage feed deliveries; identify health and ill health signs in pigs; perform supervised preventative health procedures; maintain pork production unit hygiene; catch, restrain, lift, and move pigs; and prepare pigs for transport. They will also have knowledge of feeds, feeding systems, methods, and levels for pigs; pig health, health problems, behaviour, welfare and biosecurity procedures; pig anatomy and physiology; pork production unit waste; the relationship between handling and behaviour, and productivity; and weaning, and grower and weaner pig husbandry.

The elective set recognises the skills required for preparation of pig feed by milling and mixing; maintenance and operation of mechanical dry, and automatic liquid, feeding of pigs; de-tusking a boar; and ringing a sow or boar under supervision. People will select the standard which is applicable to their workplace or personal development requirements.

People may already have completed the National Certificate in Pork Production (Stockperson) (Level 2) [Ref: 0964] prior to award of this qualification. Completion of qualification 0964 is not a requirement for entry to this qualification. The aim of qualification 0964 is to provide people with broad introductory level generic and industry skills to enable them to progress to more specialist areas of pork production.

People may complete this qualification concurrently with the National Certificate in Pork Production (Senior Stockperson - Reproduction) (Level 3) [Ref: 1561]. The aim of qualification [Ref: 1561] is to allow specialisation in reproduction in either indoor or outdoor units. Completion of both this qualification and qualification [Ref: 1561], can lead to either the National Certificate in Pork Production (Section Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 1562], or the National Certificate in Pork Production (Husbandry) (Level 4) [Ref: 1563].
