Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is designed for people who have some experience in the pork industry up to Senior Stockperson level and who wish to gain the skills to manage a section of the pork production unit as a Section Manager.

Holders of this qualification will have the skills to plan a preventative health programme; manage the sow and litter care from farrowing to weaning; manage pig breeding care from post-weaning to farrowing; select market pigs for sale, and manage their transport; plan, implement, and evaluate work routines for a pork production section; develop a health and safety plan; and prepare, monitor, and implement changes to a pork production section biosecurity plan. They will also have the knowledge of pig nutrition; pig diseases and disorders; mating and dry sow management practices, and artificial insemination; and workplace compliance requirements.

The elective sets recognise the additional skills required when involved with section management and allow people to select standards which are applicable to their workplace.

Elective 1 recognises the skills required to manage the care of the grower pig herd, and manage the care of newly weaned pigs.

Elective 2 recognises the skills required to select pig breeding stock and prepare them for sale; lead a group/team to achieve an objective(s); give oral instructions; and give and respond to feedback. This elective also recognises knowledge of the pork industry.

Candidates may already have completed the National Certificate in Pork Production (Senior Stockperson - Husbandry) (Level 3) [Ref: 1560], or the National Certificate in Pork Production (Senior Stockperson - Reproduction) (Level 3) [Ref: 1561] prior to award of this qualification. Completion of qualifications [Ref: 1560] and [Ref: 1561] is not a requirement for entry to this qualification. The aim of qualification [Ref: 1560] is to allow people to further their skills in the area of pig husbandry applicable to both indoor and outdoor units, and the aim of qualification [Ref: 1561] is to allow specialisation in pig reproduction in either indoor or outdoor production units.

People may complete this qualification concurrently with the National Certificate in Pork Production (Husbandry) (Level 4) [Ref: 1563], or may progress to the National Certificate in Pork Production (Unit Management) (Level 5) [Ref: 1564] if qualification holders wish to further their skills to manage the total pork production unit.
