Qualification Title National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Utility Arborist) (Level 2) with an optional strand in Insulated Tool Work
Qualification Type National Certificate
Level 2
Credits 53
Subject Area
  • Engineering and Related Technologies » Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Technology » Power Line Installation and Maintenance
  • Engineering and Technology » Electricity Supply
Strategic Purpose Statement
This national certificate is awarded to people who have demonstrated competence in the basic skills and knowledge required for employment in the electricity supply industry as a utility arborist undertaking vegetation control.

This qualification is intended for qualified arborists with sufficient arboriculture work experience to undertake vegetation control in the proximity of electricity supply lines. They will therefore already have all the necessary arborist skills required for undertaking vegetation control; the intention of this qualification is not to deliver any further arborist skills but to ensure they can work safely around electricity supply lines. Arborists holding this qualification will have sufficient knowledge of electricity systems, health and safety, and electricity industry safety statutes and codes to work safely in the proximity of electricity supply lines. They will also be able to operate elevating work platforms to prune trees around electrical lines, and measure trees and lines for vegetation control around electrical lines.

Arborists who wish to work in close proximity to electrical lines are required to use insulated tools. Holders of this qualification who also have the Insulated Tool Work Optional Strand will have the knowledge and skills required to work with insulated tools.

This qualification includes optional standards covering a range of additional skills suitable for utility arborists working in the proximity of electricity supply lines. Whilst these standards are not required to achieve the qualification, they may be considered necessary for some utility arborist roles within the electricity supply industry.

Although this qualification shares standards in common with the National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Vegetation Control) (Level 3) [Ref: 0857] it is intended for competent arborists wishing to undertake vegetation control in the electricity supply industry, and therefore does not contain any arborist standards, whereas [Ref: 0857] is intended for people who are not arborists and require arborist skills in order to work in the electricity supply industry undertaking vegetation control.

This qualification contains standards which introduce the electricity supply industry and cover basic safety requirements at a sufficient level to enable arborists to work safely in the proximity of electricity supply lines. These standards are also in the National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Level 2) with optional strands in Electrical, Electrical Fitter, and Line Mechanic [Ref: 1293] however, that qualification is targeted at providing a broad introduction to the electricity supply industry for future electrical workers.

This qualification builds on the National Certificate in Horticulture (Arboriculture) (Level 4) with an optional strand in Advanced [Ref: 1534]. Whilst this qualification does not lead on to any other national qualification, this qualification may be a pathway to other electricity supply qualifications.
