Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is designed specifically for secondary school students as an introductory qualification for the primary sector industries. It recognises the foundation skills and knowledge required for further training in the primary sector and allows students to experience the numerous career opportunities that exist within the primary sector.

The qualification includes a Compulsory section to ensure that all students understand the size and scope of the primary sector in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The qualification''s Elective section provides for flexibility within the qualification to reflect the areas of employment and specialisation that exist within different regions and to enable students to choose standards that meet their individual needs and learning styles.

The Elective section is made up of sets that include standards relevant to each of the primary sector industries: agriculture, dairy manufacturing and meat processing, equine, forestry, horticulture, seafood, and sports turf. Students may choose from standards in one or more sets.

The Balance section allows students to choose between specified standards from the First Aid domain, from anywhere in the Agricultural and Horticultural Science or Work and Study Skills domains. Specific standards within the Work and Study Skills domain provide students the opportunity to gain contextualised experience and knowledge in the areas of safe work practices, literacy, numeracy and communication.

The qualification recognises that students beginning a career gain skills, knowledge and experiences that are transferable across the entire primary sector. Therefore, students who are awarded this qualification can advance into tertiary study and workplace training across the primary sector.
