Strategic Purpose Statement |
The National Certificate in Health, Disability, and Aged Support (Health Assistants) (Level 3) with strands in Dietitian Assistance, Dental Assistance, Healthcare Assistance, and Rehabilitation Assistance is designed to recognise the knowledge and skills required of health assistants working in a health, disability, or community setting.
Health assistants work under the delegated authority of a supervising health professional. Worker roles include allied health assistants (such as rehabilitation assistants, physiotherapy assistants, dental assistants, and dietitian assistants), as well as healthcare assistants. The Core Compulsory section of the qualification includes standards that cover skills and knowledge that relate to achieving quality improvement objectives, applying service plan requirements, maximising a consumer's independence, supporting a client to develop and achieve goals, different human lifespan stages, the impact of changes in clients' health or functional status, communicating and accessing communication supports, and listening to gain information. The Core Electives section of the qualification allows candidates to select standards that support the requirements of their particular work environment. Core Elective Set 1 offers a choice between two standards that cover the knowledge and application of culturally safe Maori operating principles and values, and knowledge of cultural identities and culture-related issues, respectively. Core Elective Set 2 offers a choice between a standard that covers the anatomy and physiology of systems and associated organs of the human body, and a standard that covers tooth notation and anatomy, dental caries, and periodontal disease. The four specialist strands - Dietitian Assistance, Dental Assistance, Healthcare Assistance, and Rehabilitation Assistance - include a range of standards from the Community and Social Services, Humanities, Education, Service Sector, and Health fields. This qualification builds on the skills and knowledge recognised in the National Certificate in Health, Disability, and Aged Support (Foundation Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1291]. This qualification can lead to qualifications that recognise the skill sets of team leaders and senior support workers in a variety of health and disability-aligned roles such as the National Certificate in Health, Disability, and Aged Support (Senior Support) with an optional strand in Training and Assessment [Ref: 1675] and the National Certificate in Health, Disability, and Aged Support (Team Management) (Level 5) [1676]. |
