Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this qualification is to respond to the artistic aspirations of students, industry and community principally from South Auckland and to provide opportunities to develop competencies in Creative Arts so that students will be motivated and equipped to pursue a career in the creative industries or to undertake further academic study.
In addition specific aims of the programme are to:
Provide a degree level qualification that reflects the aspects and culture of the Creative Arts in the South Auckland region
Develop a strong sense and understanding of creativity
Provide students with practical business and entrepreneurial skills
Be culturally responsive to the needs of the learning community through holistic teaching practice
Provide a firm foundation for lifelong learning
Graduate profile
The graduate of MIT's Bachelor of Creative Arts programme is:
- Culturally adept with an understanding of Maori and Pasifika approaches to relationship-building;
- Skilled to manage the financial, professional, and creative demands required to generate an income;
- Confident with the required attitudes to participate in their chosen fields;
- Able to activate and nurture meaningful connections with relevant communities;
- Able to contextualise practice through research;
- Able to operate as an individual practitioner and as a productive member of a project team in a variety of contexts;
- Able to self-initiate and complete a creative design process.

A graduate of the Performing Arts Specialisation is:
- able to initiate, devise, and perform in original creative projects;
- able to share and transfer performing arts skills across multiple contexts.

A graduate of the Creative Writing Specialisation is:
- able to produce writing to a publishable standard;
- confident to edit work to a professional level.

A graduate of the Visual Arts Specialisation is:
- able to employ a specialised range of art and/or design skills to a project;
- able to initiate conversation using entrepreneurial skills in relation to their practice.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
(a) Have at least 42 NCEA credits at Level 3, including a minimum of 14 credits in each of two approved subjects, plus a minimum of 14 credits in one or two subjects and a minimum of 4 credits in reading and a minimum of 4 credits in writing, both at level 2 or equivalent
OR
(b) Have at least 72 NCEA credits at Level 2 including a minimum of 14 credits in each of two approved subjects and including 8 credits in reading/writing and including 30 credits achieved at Merit or Excellence or equivalent
OR
(c) Have at least 60 NZQA recognised credits at Level 5 or higher or equivalent
OR
(d) Have relevant work/life experience and be able to demonstrate that they can work/study at a level appropriate to the programme. Each applicant will be considered on an individual basis. To support their application applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to study at Level 5 (Year 1) including a file providing evidence of personal life skills and previous activities. Applicants will be invited to an interview. Among attributes an applicant must demonstrate are a mature and positive approach to study, commitment and motivation to succeed, and the ability to read and write at the required level for degree study.
9.1.2 English language entry requirements
All applicants must have English language competence to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be asked to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent.
