Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Graduate Diploma inApplied Addiction Studies is a unique graduate programme designed to meet the needs of graduates with related qualifications and work experience wishing to enter the addiction services field, or enhance their employment within it. The programme provides students with the practice skills and knowledge to assess and apply intervention strategies for clients with addiction and co-existing mental health disorders, gambling and other impulse control disorders; and to understand the ethics, theories and principles that underpin the work of addiction, alcohol and drug practitioners. The programme is consistent with the principles and core values of the professional body the Addiction Practitioners' Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (DAPAANZ), and will enable graduates to meet the competencies required for registration with DAPAANZ.

Graduate profile |
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Applied Addiction Studies will be able to: integrate theories of substance use, misuse and addiction into practice, apply evidence based intervention models for addiction and co-existing mental health disorders, demonstrate competence in assessment and treatment of clients with complex mental health and addiction problems, analyse and evaluate the unique issues presented by different cultural groups, understand issues relating to abuse and consider factors that correlate with addictive behaviour, mental health, work in, and facilitate a variety of group processes, work in diverse environments and contexts, demonstrate competencies that align with those required for DAPAANZ registration

Entry Requirements |
Academic: A Bachelor degree in health or social services field; or equivalent personal, practical, professional or educational experience of an appropriate kind, and at the appropriate level. This qualification is not open to graduates of WelTec's Bachelor of Addiction Studies.
English Language: IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in reading and writing or achieved the academic entry requirement in New Zealand or achieved the academic entry requirement at an institution where English was the language of instruction and assessment. Other: Basic computing ability with knowledge of Microsoft Office packages or similar software. Applicants will have to undergo a police check for entry into this programme. In the event of an adverse police report, entry into the programme will be at the discretion of the Head of School. Applicants may be required to attend an interview. |
