Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the fitness sector with individuals who have the competencies required for entry-level employment as a group fitness instructor able to deliver classes to achieve individual and collective fitness goals, using either a pre-choreographed programme or a freestyle self-choreographed programme.

Graduates of this qualification may be able to apply for full registration on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) under the scope of Group Exercise.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Instruct exercise to music classes safely and effectively with an underlying knowledge base of basic gross anatomical structures and exercise physiology.
- Manage personal fitness levels to meet role requirements and role model exercise techniques.
- Manage a class of individuals by responding to the differing motivational needs of exercise participants.
- Specialise in delivering a specific group fitness class type.
- Monitor conditions to maintain Health and Safety processes and protect exercise clients from undue risk in accordance with facility policy and procedures.

Graduates of the Pre-choreographed strand will also be able to:
- Role model a pre-choreographed routine to a set pre-choreographed programme.

Graduates of the Freestyle strand will also be able to:
- Design, instruct, and evaluate a basic freestyle group fitness class plan.
Education pathways
This certificate builds on the National Certificate in Fitness (Foundation Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1239] and can lead to the National Diploma in Fitness (Applied) (Level 5) [Ref: 1240].
Employment pathways
Holders of this certificate will be qualified to work as employed or independent pre-choreographed or freestyle group fitness instructors in fitness enterprises and/or community facilities.

The TEO must ensure that candidates pre-screen clients looking for contraindications as this is a health and safety requirement.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
