Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification provides the small scale renewable energy systems sector with people able to operate as grid-connected or stand-alone renewable energy system installers and maintainers at a technician level.
This qualification builds upon the New Zealand Certificate in Renewable Energy System Design (Level 4) with strands in Grid-connect Systems (Photovoltaic) and Stand-alone Systems (Photovoltaic), and optional endorsements in Wind Energy Systems and Micro-hydro Systems [Ref: 1938]; and is intended for candidates who wish to specialise in system installation. For the purposes of this qualification renewable energy systems must include photovoltaic systems, and may include other energy sources such as wind, and micro-hydro systems. The qualification has a focus on photovoltaic systems as this is the dominant technology that is common to the majority of systems. Optional endorsements in Wind Energy Systems and Micro-hydro Systems are available for those candidates who require training in these technologies. Installation of renewable energy systems typically involves prescribed electrical work which requires the installer to be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board. This qualification is suitable for people who hold, or who are training towards meeting the requirements of, an appropriate class of registration with the Electrical Workers Registration Board. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Install, commission, and maintain photovoltaic (PV) arrays in accordance with relevant regulations and standards. - Set up and use data communications and data logging for a renewable energy generation system. - Erect and dismantle pre-fabricated frame scaffolding. Graduates of the Grid-connect Systems strand will also be able to: - Install, commission, and maintain grid-connected photovoltaic systems in accordance with relevant regulations and standards. Graduates of the Stand-alone Systems (Photovoltaic) strand will also be able to: - Install, commission, and maintain stand-alone photovoltaic systems in accordance with relevant regulations and standards. Graduates of the Wind Energy Systems strand will also be able to: - Install, commission, and maintain renewable energy systems incorporating a wind energy system. Graduates of the Micro-hydro Systems strand will also be able to: - Install, commission, and maintain renewable energy systems incorporating a micro-hydro generating system. |

Education pathways |
This qualification provides a specific skill set for individuals that wish to specialise in the installation of small scale renewable energy systems. This qualification may build upon, or lead to, other electrotechnology qualifications.
To enter programmes leading to the award of this qualification, candidates must be graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Renewable Energy System Design (Level 4) with strands in Grid-connect Systems (Photovoltaic) and Stand-alone Systems (Photovoltaic), and optional endorsements in Wind Energy Systems and Micro-hydro Systems [Ref: 1938]. Candidates intending to enrol in this qualification and elect the Grid-Connect strand, must have completed the Grid-Connect strand in Ref: 1938. Similarly, candidates intending to enrol in this qualification and elect the Stand-alone strand, must have completed the Stand alone strand in Ref: 1938. Candidates intending to enrol in this qualification, who intend to complete either of the optional endorsements in this qualification, must have completed the corresponding optional endorsement in Ref: 1938. Installation of renewable energy systems typically involves prescribed electrical work which will require the installer to hold an appropriate class of registration with the Electrical Workers Registration Board and a current practicing license. Candidates will require registration to graduate from and be awarded this qualification. Completion of training towards Ref. 1938 and/or Ref. 1939 does not fulfill the requirements for electrical registration or a practicing license. Candidates who do not already hold registration will need to complete further training to fulfill these requirements. |
