Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is:
- To supply the food and beverage sector with employees who are able to provide service in cafes and unlicensed restaurants, quick-service restaurants, bars or clubs, restaurants offering table or buffet service, establishments catering functions in-house, or baristas.
- To provide a credential for those individuals who are employed as service personnel that will support their employment opportunities across a range of establishments in the hospitality sector.
- To establish standards of professional practice for basic service that can provide customers with confidence in a range of hospitality environments.
The strands in this qualification allow graduates to specialise in an area of food and beverage service.
Graduates will be able to operate to provide food and/or beverage service in a casual dining or bar context.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply health and safety, food safety and security practices to ensure own safety and minimise potential hazards when serving customers in a hospitality establishment.
- Communicate effectively when serving customers and behave in a professional manner with colleagues, managers and customers in a hospitality establishment.
- Follow standard operating procedures to deal with familiar problems in a hospitality establishment.

Graduates of the Barista strand will also be able to:
- Prepare and present a range of espresso beverages for customers.

Graduates of the Bar Services strand will also be able to:
- Provide alcoholic beverages and food service in a bar.

Graduates of the Buffet Services strand will also be able to:
- Provide and maintain a buffet service.

Graduates of the Café Services strand will also be able to:
- Prepare and serve food and beverages in a café.

Graduates of the Function Services strand will also be able to:
- Provide food and beverage service for in-house functions.

Graduates of the Quick Service Restaurant Services strand will also be able to:
- Prepare for and provide food service in a quick service restaurant

Graduates of the Restaurant Services strand will also be able to:
- Provide food and beverage service in a restaurant.

This qualification can lead on to the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 4) with strands in Restaurant Services and Quick Service Restaurant Services [Ref: 2105].
