Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the Telecommunications industry with advanced technicians who are able to operate with a broad knowledge and understanding of telecommunications technology, ensuring an efficient, reliable, and secure network.
Graduates of the Access Network, Core Network, and Radio/Wireless Technologies strands will be able to install, maintain, and repair telecommunications networks. Graduates of the Signals and Communications strand will also be able to operate signals and communications equipment and networks. Strands in Design and Technical Service Desk are available for individuals who wish to further specialise in these areas. Graduates will be able to work as advanced technicians under broad guidance in their area of practice, and be able to supervise and support technical personnel in some situations. |

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Communicate effectively to provide support and solutions for stakeholders and supervision of personnel. - Apply business policies and procedures including management of information and records. - Maintain a safe working environment and implement hazard management policies and procedures. - Apply relevant industry, community, government and environmental regulations and standards. - Maintain advanced knowledge of current and emerging technologies and develop knowledge in their area of practice. Graduates of the Access Network Technologies strand will also be able to: - Develop and apply a range of standard and non-standard processes and solutions to the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications networks and equipment - Install and maintain network equipment and services across a broad range of situations - Install and maintain networks ICT systems and services across a broad range of situations - Diagnose and repair networks equipment and services across a broad range of situations Graduates of the Core Network Technologies strand will also be able to: - Develop and apply a range of standard and non-standard processes and solutions to the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications networks and equipment - Install and maintain network equipment and services across a broad range of situations - Install and maintain networks ICT systems and services across a broad range of situations - Diagnose and repair networks equipment and services across a broad range of situations Graduates of the Radio/Wireless Technologies strand will also be able to: - Develop and apply a range of standard and non-standard processes and solutions to the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications networks and equipment - Install and maintain network equipment and services across a broad range of situations - Install and maintain networks ICT systems and services across a broad range of situations - Diagnose and repair networks equipment and services across a broad range of situations Graduates of the Signals and Communications strand will also be able to: - Develop and apply a range of standard and non-standard processes and solutions to the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications signal and communications technologies and equipment - Apply advanced knowledge of radio communication - Apply advanced knowledge of tactical communication - Manage and operate advanced strategic information systems - Manage communications protocols and procedures during shift and shift change over - Manage maintenance requirements of Signals and Communications technologies and equipment Graduates of the Telecommunications Design strand will also be able to: - Develop and apply a range of standard and non-standard processes and solutions to the design of installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications technologies and equipment - Prepare design within defined parameters - Prepare an estimate against completed design - Evaluate design against stakeholder requirements - Submit design and estimate into workflow process Graduates of the Telecommunications Technical Service Desk strand will also be able to: - Develop a range of standard and non-standard processes and solutions to the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications network - Receive and resolve technical and service requirement - Effectively communicate technical and service information to stakeholders - Use helpdesk systems and equipment |

Education pathways |
The New Zealand Certificate in Telecommunications (Level 3) with strands in Access Network Technologies, Core Network Technologies, Radio/Wireless Technologies, and Signals and Communications [Ref: 2210] or equivalent skills and knowledge, is a recommended prerequisite to this qualification.
On completion of this qualification graduates may progress on to higher qualifications in the telecommunications field. |
