Strategic Purpose Statement
Strategic Purpose Statement The programme aims to develop graduates exhibiting intellectual independence and capability, meeting the requirements for award of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, and satisfying the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) requirements for entry to engineering practice, leading to professional recognition in the following areas: Civil Engineering with specialisation in Structural, Water and Water Waste, Roading-Transportation, Geotechnical, or Environmental Engineering.
Graduate profile
Graduate Profile Graduates will have a demonstrated graduate profile aligning with IPENZ Graduate Capability Profile for Engineering Technologists.
Civil Major graduates will be able to work from a sound civil engineering base with sufficient skills to competently manage technical operations as required by the engineering profession; liaise effectively with design and management professionals, clients, regulatory authorities and contractors; and have an understanding of different cultures and in particular an awareness and clear understanding of the tangata whenua and the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Resource Management Act. Graduates will have the following specialisation attributes within the discipline:
Structural Engineering: in-depth knowledge of the principles and practice involved in the design of structures using steel, timber, concrete and masonry and other materials; ability to apply their expertise to projects in professional civil engineering environments.
Water and Water Waste Engineering: in-depth knowledge of the principles and practice relating to water reticulation systems, treatment and disposal of liquid and solid wastes, catchment runoff, erosion, water balances and sustainable land use, urban wastewater and stormwater systems; ability to apply their expertise projects in professional civil engineering environments.
Roading-Transportation Engineering: in depth knowledge of the principles and practice relating to traffic engineering and the design and construction of highways, road design, economic criteria and maintenance strategies, urban traffic engineering concepts and procedures; ability to apply their expertise to projects in professional civil engineering environments.
Geotechnical Engineering: an in-depth knowledge of the principles and practice relating to geology as related to civil engineering practice, geotechnical engineering, foundation engineering in professional contexts; ability to apply their expertise to projects in professional civil engineering environments.
Environmental Engineering: in-depth knowledge and ability to critically appraise the chemical nature of the environment together with its pollutants and hazards, effects of the development on the natural and developed environments, the processes and issues related to the sustainable utilisation of resources, the impact of human endeavour upon the environment; ability to apply their expertise to projects in a variety of professional environments.
Education pathways
Education Pathway Graduates may also enrol in and receive credit towards a four-year Professional Engineering Degree (BE), or enrol in postgraduate study.

Credits
